Letter of explanation
Cartagena de Indias, 2004
To whom it may concern
From: FUNDACION DE JESUS
We direct ourselves to you in order to present the projects of the FUNDACION
DE JESUS (Jesus Foundation), which are carried out among the population
that inhabits the zone bordering the Swamp of the Virgin in the Southeastern
Zone of the City of Cartagena.
The FUNDACION DE JESUS is a non-profit organization, registered in the
Chamber of Commerce of the City of Cartagena (Reg. Number: NIT #806.012919.9).
It has administrative and financial autonomy as is established by Colombian law
for social welfare organizations.
Our vision is to transform and to dignify the life of children and adults
through strategies of support and sustainable development, in order to provide a
better quality of life for its inhabitants, along with the restoration of moral
and spiritual values and a new hope for love and peace in Jesus.
Our mission is to work, through the aid of independent and state funds, in the
areas of education, health, and nutrition of children, and through the teaching
of basic job skills which will qualify adult men and women to find jobs, so that
they may generate incomes that enable them to achieve a better quality of life,
all framed in the Christian principles of love, solidarity and service.
The FUNDACION DE JESUS works through state contributions and the
donations of individuals and businesses that support our efforts through
different strategies called PLAN PADRINO or PLAN AMIGO, by which they can
provide funds for individual children or one of our programs. Without their
support and economic contributions it would be impossible to continue with these
social projects.
To conclude, we present our basic programs in order for you to evaluate the
possibility of becoming part of our foundation and joining us as you feel
appropriate.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM
The Southeastern zone of Cartagena has an extension of approximately 2000 acres
and a population close to 300,000 inhabitants. It contains a total of 77
districts and sectors which hold a total of approximately 40,000 houses that
border the Swamp of the Virgin.
This swamp has an area of 22.5 square kilometers, and a water volume of 13,5
million cubic meters. Different efforts have been carried out through the years
in order to change its sanitary and social conditions, but due to the problems
in the rural areas of the country, a great number of displaced citizens have
moved from their towns into Cartagena and have inhabited this area in a
disorganized manner. Only five years ago, as part of a cleaning process for its
bodies of water, the first engineering project was carried out.
In terms of health, its inhabitants live in houses constructed with recyclable
materials such as cardboard, tables and plastics, which they obtain from the
areas where the refuse of the city is discarded. They do not have basic sanitary
services such as water, electricity, sewage drains, domestic gas, or telephones.
The average area of houses is 12 square meters, which along with the difficult
sanitary conditions provide the necessary environment for health, social and
emotional problems.
The lack of a regular and sufficient income for the families make education a
secondary factor. All the efforts in each family are directed towards meeting
the necessary basic daily needs. Even children at an early age take part in the
chores necessary for family subsistence and are put to work.
